Claude Ultra vs Max: What Changed on 30 October 2026 and Who Wins
Anthropic renamed Max 5x to Max and Max 20x to Ultra on 30 October 2026. Verified Ultra accounts lose the 5-hour session limit.
- Max 5x is now Max at $100 a month - same plan, same limits, new shorter name.
- Max 20x is now Ultra at $200 a month with one real change: verified accounts lose the 5-hour limit.
- Weekly limits are unchanged - Ultra is 10x Pro per week, Max is 5x Pro per week.
- Pro is unaffected - still $20 a month (or $17 billed yearly).
- Check your status - open Settings, then Usage. No "Current session" bar means you are verified.
Anthropic renamed its two highest Claude plans on 30 October 2026. Max 5x is now Max at $100 a month, and Max 20x is now Ultra at $200 a month. Prices did not change, and existing subscribers move to the new names automatically. The one real change is on Ultra: verified accounts no longer have a 5-hour limit. The weekly limit stays, so Ultra is not unlimited.
What Changed on 30 October
The announcement came from the official @claudeai account on X on 30 October 2026. It said Max is still $100 a month and Ultra is still $200, and that subscribers have nothing to do. The change is already on the Claude pricing page, and the Help Center now has a page titled "What is the Ultra plan?" that describes it in the same terms.
For most subscribers, the rename itself changes nothing on the bill. The plan you had keeps its price and its weekly allowance. What changes is the name on the plan and, for Ultra, the session limit.
| Plan | Old Name | Price / Month | 5-Hour Limit | Weekly Limit | API Credits / Month |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pro | Pro | $20, or $17 billed yearly | 1x Pro | 1x Pro | None listed |
| Max | Max 5x | $100 | 5x Pro | 5x Pro | $100 |
| Ultra | Max 20x | $200 | None for verified accounts | 10x Pro | $200 |
Pro is not affected by the rename. It still costs $20 a month, or $17 a month on an annual subscription, and it keeps both a 5-hour limit and a weekly limit. Max and Ultra are sold with monthly billing only.
Both Max and Ultra include Claude Code, and the same limits apply there as in the Claude app. That matters if you use Claude Code for long sessions, because a 5-hour wall in the middle of a coding session is the exact problem Ultra now removes for verified accounts.
The 5-Hour Limit is Gone on Ultra, for Verified Accounts Only
This is the change that matters. Anthropic said it is "removing the 5-hour limit for verified Ultra accounts, starting today with most existing subscribers." Newer accounts keep a temporary limit until they are verified, which Anthropic says helps it prevent fraud and abuse. Those accounts get an email when the limit is removed.
Verification is automatic. Anthropic checks factors such as account and payment history, and there is no form to fill in. Verifying a phone number at checkout is a separate step and does not remove this limit on its own.
You can check your own account in Claude under Settings, then Usage. If there is no "Current session" bar, Anthropic says your account is verified and has no 5-hour limit. If the bar is still there, the temporary limit still applies.
In practice, a verified Ultra subscriber can now work through a long coding or research session without stopping at the 5-hour boundary, as long as weekly capacity remains. Burn through the weekly allowance in two long days and you still have to wait for the weekly reset. The weekly limit resets at a fixed time each week that is assigned to your account.
Why Ultra is 10x, Not 20x, Per Week
The old name caused the confusion. Max 20x sounded like 20 times Pro every week, but the 20x was the 5-hour number, not the weekly number. When Anthropic added weekly limits to Max 20x in August 2025, it set the weekly limit at 10 times Pro while the 5-hour limit stayed at 20 times Pro. The pricing page now puts the weekly figure in writing for the first time: Ultra is 10 times Pro usage every week.
Anthropic says weekly limits remain unchanged, so this is not a cut. Ultra subscribers had 10 times Pro per week before the rename, and they still do. What changed is that the 5-hour window no longer sits on top of that weekly allowance for verified accounts. The week is now the only limit left on Ultra.
Max keeps the same shape it had as Max 5x: 5 times Pro usage every 5 hours and every week. Fable, Anthropic's top model, has a separate weekly limit on both plans, capped at up to half of the weekly limit.
Who Should Pay $200 for Ultra
Pro
- 1x Pro limits (5-hour + weekly)
- $17/mo billed yearly
- Best if you rarely hit limits
Max
- 5x Pro (5-hour + weekly)
- $100 in API credits/mo
- Best if 5-hour wall is not your problem
Ultra
- No 5-hour limit (verified accounts)
- 10x Pro weekly allowance
- $200 in API credits/mo
- Best for heavy Claude Code sessions
Pay for Ultra if you hit the 5-hour wall often and you already use most of your weekly allowance. You get twice the weekly usage of Max, no 5-hour stop once verified, and $200 a month in Claude Platform API credits instead of $100. Long Claude Code sessions are the clearest case: a session that used to stop mid afternoon can now run until the weekly allowance runs out.
Stay on Max if you rarely hit the 5-hour limit. Max gives you 5 times Pro every 5 hours and every week for $100, plus $100 a month in API credits and priority access at busy times. The rename did not make Max worse. It is the same plan under a shorter name.
Stay on Pro if your usage fits inside it. Pro is $20 a month, or $17 a month billed yearly, and it keeps the same 5-hour and weekly structure at 1 times Pro. Moving to Max doubles nothing useful if you never reach the Pro limits in the first place.
What Did Not Change
Prices did not change. Max is $100 a month and Ultra is $200, the same as Max 5x and Max 20x were. Existing subscribers move automatically and need to take no action.
Weekly limits did not change. Ultra is 10 times Pro per week, Max is 5 times Pro per week, and Pro is 1 times Pro. The weekly reset still happens at a fixed time assigned to your account.
The API credits did not change in size, only in how they line up with the new names: $100 a month on Max and $200 a month on Ultra. Fable access did not change either. It is still capped at up to half of the weekly limit on both plans.

Conclusion
The rename is simple once the 20x label is out of the way. Max 5x became Max at $100 a month, Max 20x became Ultra at $200 a month, and nothing on the bill changed. The one thing that did change is worth the attention: verified Ultra accounts no longer stop at the 5-hour wall, so the weekly allowance is now the only limit that matters on the top plan.
Before you pay $200, check your own usage in Settings, then Usage. If the 5-hour bar or the weekly bar stops your work, Ultra is the fix. If neither does, Max at $100 is the same plan it was last week.
